Impact of Low-E Window Films on Energy Consumption

  Glass windows are generally thermally emissive and hence during the daytime, there is always a possibility of solar heat heating up a room's interior. Such solar heat gain can have a major impact on the comfort levels of people staying inside and also increases the total cooling costs of the building. Especially office spaces where the use of glass windows is prominent. It is estimated that typically, as much as 30-40% of the total cooling cost of a building with large glass windows, is due to the solar heat gains due to windows.   Low Emittance or Low E-Window Films is one of the simplest ways to tackle this problem. Low-E window films have metallic coatings or dyes that allow lower transmission of solar heat through the window that reduces heat gain inside the building. Thus, by simply applying Low-E thin films to window glass, one can drastically reduce the solar heat gain and thereby reduce the energy consumption of the building.
